We would like to welcome you and your child to Year 1's class page. There will be lots of exciting things being added to the this page throughout the year. We hope your find the information useful. If you have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to find one of us as we will be more than happy to assist you with any of your concerns.

Meet the Year 1 Team

As a staff team, we believe we can more effectively meet your child’s needs if we work together. We value your input as your child’s primary carer, and as an expert on your child. We rely on your partnership, so together we can provide your child with the highest quality education and care. This will make their time at school happy and enjoyable.

Every morning, staff are available at the entrances into school for you to pass on quick messages or ask questions. If you need a more private moment, or need to speak to your child’s teacher at length, you are very welcome to make an appointment.

General Information

Session times

School starts at 8:45am and ends at 3.15pm. Please try hard to get your child to school on time and to collect them promptly. If your child is late it is extremely important that you come in via the main reception to let the office staff know your child has arrived.

Play times and Dinner time

At lunch time the children will eat their packed lunch or school dinner in the dinner hall with other children.  Once your child has finished their lunch they will get the opportunity to play with the Year 2 children.

There are two play times for Year 1, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. During the morning playtime the children can buy a slice of toast for 20p. Please try to send in the correct change.

Fruit

We encourage healthy eating and ensure your child is given a daily choice of fruit free of charge for under 7 year olds.

Milk

Your child is only entitled to free milk up to the age of 5. After their 5th birthday if you want your child to continue to receive milk at school you need to register online at www.coolmilk.com. The cost is subsidised and costs £18 per term.

How to support your child's learning at home

On behalf of year 1, we would like to say thank you for looking into how to support your child's learning at home!

There are a number of ways to aid your childs learning from home, these include:

  • Listen to them reading as many times as you can throughout the week. This will develop your child's reading skills and encourage a love of reading both in school, and at home. It is also really important to ask relevant questions to your child whilst reading for example, 'where did the event happen in the story?' 'how do you think the character felt when that happened?', this will also help develop your child's comprehension skills.
  • Sign your child's reading record and return it to school as soon as your child has read and understood a book, this will allow us to change your child's book quickly and your child can then move their rocket up on our 'Rocket into Reading' class display!
  • Continue to practise your child's phonics sounds with them, you can find helpful videos by Mrs Papadopoulos for each sound your child will be learning. These can be found under 'Children > Beacon on Youtube! > Phonics' on the school website.
  • Help your child learn their timestables, in particular the x2, x5 and x10's. The children know this best by counting in their 2's, 5's and 10's. Aiding their learning of timestables can be done by chanting, singing, or simple videos linked below.
  • Support them with their homework and ensure it is completed and returned to school every Friday.
  • Practise spellings with them, in particular, spellings that include their phonics sounds or the Year 1 common exception words that are linked below.
